Labour Day : Is work a burden or a blessing?
Some people merely work to earn a living, others like what they are doing or even do what they like most. Although money is a strong motivator, it is certainly not the only one.
In my career I had different episodes and I worked as a teacher, a social worker, a stay at home mother, a volunteer and a community and event’s organiser. These jobs only had in common that they gave me great pleasure, satisfaction and….applause.
I am convinced that one of the strongest motivators is to be acknowledged and appreciated. My father used to say that it didn’t matter what you do for a living as long as you do it to the best of your abilities. I guess this attitude made it a little easier on me to change profession as the path of my life was taking unexpected curves.
I am happy there are people who are baking bread and wake up early so I can eat fresh baguettes for breakfast. I am grateful for the men who unclogged our drain yesterday. The list is endless of people who make our life possible: the drivers, waiters, cleaning staff, nurses,... We often take their commitment, involvement and enthusiasm for granted.
Maybe we have to think less that money pays for everything, what people need most is applause!
